In a truly superhero-style sting, two Metropolitan Police officers took an unconventional approach to tackling illegal gambling on Westminster Bridge—by dressing as Batman and Robin.
The comic book-inspired operation took place on Saturday, 15 February, as part of the Met’s effort to disrupt gambling gangs who target tourists with the well-known ‘three cups challenge’ or ‘shell game’ scam.
Officers say these illegal gambling rings have become increasingly difficult to tackle, with repeat offenders recognising local patrol officers. But this time, it was Batman and Robin to the rescue.

Superheroes in Disguise
Inspector Darren Watson and Police Constable Abdi Osman, both part of the Lambeth North West neighbourhood team, donned superhero costumes and launched a stealth operation on the bridge.
“We knew that two repeat offenders had become familiar with our faces,” said Inspector Watson, aka Batman.
“We had to think outside the box. I remembered I had the costumes to hand and thought—why not?”
The creative plan paid off. Two men were caught in the act and arrested for providing facilities for illegal gambling.
Arrests and Court Outcomes
- Eugen Stocia, 32, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene but failed to attend court. He was convicted in absence at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 10 April, and a warrant is now out for his arrest.
- Constica-Gherorghe Barbu, 53, of Herbert Road, Greenwich, was remanded by police and convicted two days later at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 17 February. He was fined £925.

A Creative Crimefighting Approach
Though unconventional, the officers’ decision to embrace capes and cowls was hailed as a success in tackling criminal activity that has plagued one of London’s most iconic landmarks.
“Although dressing up may not be the most conventional policing method, we were thrilled to see that it worked,” said Inspector Watson.
“This operation helped remove repeat offenders from the bridge and protected Londoners and tourists from being fleeced.”
Public Urged to Report Activity
The Met Police is urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected gambling activity on Westminster Bridge or elsewhere. Reports can be made by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.
This operation proves that sometimes, fighting crime takes more than a badge—it might just take a cape.
