An explosion at a residential property in Cleat Hill on Saturday has prompted a significant response from Bedfordshire Police, who are still on the scene today as safety measures and investigations continue.
The explosion, which led to the tragic death of one individual and left another in hospital with serious injuries, has also revealed elevated levels of natural gas in the ground surrounding the site. As a precaution, authorities have evacuated the immediate area and implemented a cordon and road closures, which remain in effect.
Bedfordshire Police have confirmed that the gas levels appear to be naturally occurring from an underground source and are not linked to the gas pipe network in the area.
“Our main priority is safety, and we are still advising people to avoid the Cleat Hill area while work at the scene continues,” a police spokesperson said. “We know that residents of nearby properties want to return to their homes as quickly as possible, and we appreciate their patience and support during this time.”
Authorities have also reminded drone owners that the area around Cleat Hill is currently a no-fly zone to ensure the safety of emergency personnel working at the scene.
Bedfordshire Police are collaborating with multiple agencies as part of the ongoing investigation into the cause and circumstances of the explosion. The spokesperson added, “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the person who sadly died and the person who is being treated in hospital.”
