A major section of the M25 is closed in both directions after a lorry carrying tyres caught fire between junction 29 (Romford) and junction 30 (Dartford) shortly after 1:00pm today.

The HGV, travelling clockwise, was engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke from the burning tyres visible for miles. Dramatic footage shows the vehicle parked on the hard shoulder as firefighters battle the blaze.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews from Grays, Basildon, Brentwood, as well as London Fire Brigade and Kent Fire and Rescue Service, are at the scene.

“The lorry is carrying tyres, which are alight and producing large amounts of smoke,” an ECFRS spokesperson said. “Please avoid the area if you can and take extra care if you are near the scene.”

Travel disruption expected all day

National Highways says the road will remain closed throughout the day due to the intensity of the fire and the likelihood of road resurfacing being required.

Drivers are facing delays of at least 60 minutes on the anticlockwise carriageway, and diversions are in place.

Essex Police confirmed there have been no injuries and officers are assisting emergency services.

“The M25 is closed in both directions between junctions 29 and 31 following a lorry fire. Please check before you travel and plan your journeys accordingly,” a police spokesperson said.
