Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 28-year-old woman in Tilehurst, Reading.

Thames Valley Police said officers were called to the riverbank behind Tilehurst Station at around 11.30pm on Sunday, 24 August, after reports of a cardiac arrest.

The woman was taken to hospital, but despite the efforts of medical teams she was later pronounced dead.

A 39-year-old man from Reading was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

While the incident occurred just a mile from the Reading Festival site, detectives said they do not believe those involved had attended the event.

Detective Inspector Alice Broad, from the force’s Major Crime Unit, said:

“We understand this unexplained death and arrest will be of concern but we do not believe there is any threat to the wider public.

While we have arrested a man on suspicion of murder, the woman’s death is currently unexplained and the suspect remains in our custody.

While the deceased woman has not been formally identified as we have not spoken to her next of kin yet, we believe she was staying in the area and knew the suspect.

A police cordon remained in place on Tuesday but was expected to be lifted later in the day.

The coroner has been informed.

Police are urging anyone with information to call 101 or visit the Thames Valley Police website, quoting incident reference 43250434350.

Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
