A major road closure is in place in Whyteleafe this evening (Tuesday, 12 August) following the discovery of a suspicious device at a building site.

Police were called to the scene at around 3:10pm. Officers remain at the location alongside Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, with a bomb disposal unit en route.

Whyteleafe Hill has been closed in both directions and a cordon is in place as a precaution. Motorists are being urged to seek alternative routes to avoid the area.

A Surrey Police spokesperson said:

“We are currently dealing with a report of a suspicious device found at a building site in Whyteleafe. Please avoid the area while we work with partner agencies to ensure public safety.”

No further details about the device have been released at this stage.
