James Phillips, aged 46, has been charged with malicious communications following an abusive and threatening phone call received by Conservative MP Mike Freer last week, confirmed authorities. Phillips is scheduled to appear at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, February 7.
The incident comes in the wake of Mr. Freer’s announcement that he would not be seeking re-election, citing a series of death threats and abusive behaviour directed towards him. The MP for Finchley and Golders Green, currently serving as a minister, highlighted an arson attack on his office on Christmas Eve as a significant factor influencing his decision to step down.
Last Thursday, Mr. Freer’s office reported an abusive and threatening phone call received by the MP on the previous day, coinciding with the announcement of his decision to withdraw from electoral candidacy. Subsequently, an investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of James Phillips on Tuesday.
In addition to the charge of malicious communications, Phillips has also been charged with assaulting a police officer, as confirmed by the authorities.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation into the arson attack at Mr. Freer’s office on Christmas Eve remains ongoing. Two individuals, a man, and a woman have already been charged with arson with intent to endanger life in connection with the incident.
Police emphasized that the two incidents, the abusive phone call and the arson attack, are not being linked. Investigations into each case are proceeding independently.
Mr. Freer’s case is one among several instances of threats and abuse directed at political figures, highlighting concerns about the safety and security of elected representatives. The MP’s decision to step down underscores the impact of such behaviour on public officials and the broader political landscape.
