Anthony Fowler, a prolific child abuser who targeted children over thirty years ago, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison following a painstaking investigation by Metropolitan Police officers. This case highlights the Met’s unwavering commitment to investigating child abuse and transforming the way it protects the public from harm.
Fowler, 74, of Duncombe Road, Islington, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday, 30 July. He was previously found guilty on 13 June of nine counts of sexual offending, including bestiality.
The court heard that Fowler subjected one victim to a series of abhorrent sexual assaults over a two-year period starting in 1992, when the victim was under 10 years old. A second victim later came forward, reporting that they had also been abused by Fowler over several years.
Specialist officers launched an investigation into Fowler when his victim came forward 28 years after the crimes took place. Determined to build a strong case, police conducted extensive interviews with friends and family of the victim and gathered detailed medical records to illustrate the extent of the abuse. Fowler initially showed no remorse, answering ‘no comment’ during interviews and denying any child abuse.
Detective Chief Inspector Sarb Kaur, who led the investigation, said, “I hope that the bravery and willingness of Fowler’s victims to come forward serves as an inspiration to those who may otherwise fear speaking out against this kind of abhorrent abuse.
“Officers showed true determination in securing justice on behalf of the victims. I’d like to thank them for their compassion and dedication. They are a credit to the Met.
“We would urge anyone who has been a victim of abuse – no matter how long ago – to please come forward to police and get the support they so rightly deserve.”
