A Maidstone man, Robert Jenner, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of attempting to murder a police officer in a ferocious attack that left the constable with over 20 injuries.
Brutal Assault
The assault occurred on the evening of 15 June 2023 when police responded to Jenner’s flat in Albion Place following allegations of indecent exposure in nearby Mote Park.
Upon arrival, officers found Jenner completely naked and refusing to allow them entry, having barricaded his door with furniture. Once access was gained, Jenner fled into a darkened room, where he launched a savage attack on one of the officers with a pair of scissors.
The constable sustained serious injuries to his head, face, neck, and limbs during the attack, which lasted more than 20 seconds. The assault ended only when the officer’s colleagues intervened and restrained Jenner.
Trial and Sentencing
Jenner was charged with attempted murder but pleaded not guilty. He was convicted at Maidstone Crown Court after a trial held in his absence, as he repeatedly refused to leave his cell.
On Tuesday, 4 February 2025, Jenner was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment. The judge deemed him “dangerous”, requiring him to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole. Upon release, he will be subject to an extended licence period of five years.
Police Statement
Chief Superintendent Neil Loudon described the incident as one of the most horrific attacks he had witnessed:
“Jenner was responsible for a sustained and savage attack against a front-line police officer dedicated to serving his local community. This terrifying ordeal only ended when colleagues intervened.
“Jenner inflicted some of the worst injuries to a constable I have ever seen. His actions highlight the dangers police officers face daily to protect the public. Jenner has shown contempt for the law throughout the proceedings and remains unrepentant. He is a serious and substantial threat to the public and will rightly remain in prison for a very long time.”
Impact on Policing
This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by front-line officers. Despite the severe injuries sustained, the officer involved has since returned to duty, showcasing the bravery and resilience of police officers committed to protecting their communities.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring those who attack emergency workers face the full weight of the law.
