An investigation has been launched after two elderly women fell victim to purse thefts in Brighouse, prompting West Yorkshire Police to release CCTV images of the suspects involved.
The thefts occurred on January 25 along Commercial Street, a popular shopping area, raising significant concerns among local residents and business owners about the safety of seniors in the community.
Details of the Incidents
According to police reports obtained by The Sentinel Current, both victims, who did not know each other, were shopping in the area when their purses were discreetly stolen from their handbags.
“Both women were going about their day when they discovered their purses had been taken without their knowledge,” a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police confirmed. “These incidents are deeply concerning, particularly as they target vulnerable members of our community.”
The Calderdale District Investigation Team is leading the inquiry and has since released CCTV footage showing two individuals believed to be connected to the thefts. The images depict two suspects loitering near elderly shoppers, appearing to follow them closely before making their move.
Community Reacts with Concern
The incidents have sparked concern among Brighouse residents, particularly seniors who frequent Commercial Street.
“It’s frightening to think that people are targeting the elderly like this,” said Margaret Ellis, a 72-year-old Brighouse resident. “We come here to shop and socialize, not to worry about someone stealing from us.”
Local businesses have also voiced their concerns, with several shop owners calling for increased police patrols in the area.
“We want our customers to feel safe,” said Tom Parker, who owns a bakery on Commercial Street. “These kinds of crimes make people think twice before coming into town.”
Police Appeal for Information
West Yorkshire Police is urging anyone who recognizes the individuals in the CCTV images or who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area on January 25 to come forward.
“Even the smallest detail could help us identify those responsible,” said Detective Inspector Sarah Holden from the Calderdale District Investigation Team. “We’re particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from Commercial Street around the time of the thefts.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police by calling 101, quoting crime reference 1325003872. Alternatively, tips can be submitted anonymously via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
Safety Advice for Shoppers
In light of the recent incidents, police are reminding residents, particularly elderly shoppers, to take precautions when out in public:
- Keep purses and wallets in zipped bags or close to your body.
- Be mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or unnecessary valuables.
- Report any suspicious behavior to police or store security immediately.
Ongoing Investigation
As the investigation continues, police are increasing patrols in Brighouse to reassure the community and deter further incidents.
“We understand the impact that crimes like this have on victims and the wider community,” added Detective Inspector Holden. “We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as efforts to locate the culprits intensify.
