Millwall fans sparked outrage during their FA Cup fifth-round clash against Crystal Palace after chanting “let him die” at striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was carried off on a stretcher following a horrific challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts.
Reckless Challenge Leaves Mateta Hospitalizsed
The shocking incident took place just eight minutes into the match at Selhurst Park, when Roberts attempted to clear a through ball but instead kicked Mateta in the head with his studs.
The 27-year-old French forward collapsed to the ground and was immediately given oxygen by medical staff. The game was paused for nine minutes while Mateta received treatment before being stretchered off and taken to hospital.
VAR Intervention and Red Card
Match referee Michael Oliver initially did not award a free-kick for the challenge. However, after a VAR review, Roberts was shown a straight red card, leaving Millwall with 10 men for nearly the entire match.
BBC commentator and former England defender Matt Upson described the incident as “deeply concerning,” while ex-Brighton striker Glenn Murray added: “Roberts catches Mateta’s temple with his studs. It’s a shocking challenge.”
Crystal Palace Chairman Furious Over ‘Reckless’ Tackle
Palace chairman Steve Parish was left furious, telling the BBC at halftime:
“So far, we know he’s got a bad gash behind his ear and a head injury. He’s at the hospital, and we hope for the best.”
“That’s the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen. That lad (Roberts) needs to have a long, hard look at himself because he’s endangering a fellow professional—maybe even his life.”
Millwall Fans’ Disgraceful Chanting Sparks Outrage
As Mateta was being stretchered off, disgraceful chants of “let him die” echoed from the Millwall away section, sparking widespread condemnation.
In stark contrast, Crystal Palace supporters gave Mateta a standing ovation, chanting his name as he was taken off the pitch.
‘A Dreadful Challenge’ – Calls for Stricter Punishment
Parish continued his criticism of the incident, questioning why VAR was even needed for such a clear-cut decision:
“They’re all professionals out there, and they’ve got to treat each other like professionals. They’ve got a duty of care, and that goalkeeper hasn’t shown one.”
“If you’re kicking someone in the head with full force, God knows what damage has been done to him.”
Football Community Reacts
While Millwall Football Club has yet to comment on the actions of their fans, calls are growing for stronger action against dangerous tackles and abusive fan behavior.
As Mateta remains under medical observation, Crystal Palace fans will be hoping for positive news about their striker’s condition in the coming days.
