David Joyce, a 38-year-old man from Milton Keynes, was shot dead by police outside Milton Keynes Central Rail Station on Tuesday, April 1. Joyce, who had a previous history of criminal charges involving firearms, died from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen after an armed officer fired at him.
The incident unfolded shortly before 1 pm when police received reports of a man with a gun at the station. Officers from Thames Valley Police (TVP) responded to the scene, where Joyce was seen with a knife in his hand, moving toward officers. Despite initial reports suggesting he was armed with a gun, no firearms were recovered from the scene.
Police Investigation and Witness Appeal
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the shooting. An IOPC spokesperson said:
“We have obtained body-worn video footage and substantial CCTV footage, which show the man just outside the railway station entrance holding a knife. Shortly afterward, he was shot at close range. One officer fired a single shot.”
Investigators are urging witnesses to come forward, as there were many people near the station at the time. The IOPC is also seeking CCTV footage from nearby public buildings. Witnesses can contact the IOPC at 0300 303 5727 or via email at [email protected].
Previous Criminal Record
In early 2022, Joyce, then 35, was charged with:
- Two counts of possession of a firearm
- Two counts of possession of an offensive weapon
- One count of possession of an article for use in connection with the conversion of imitation firearms
These charges stemmed from a warrant executed at his home in Hodge Lea, Milton Keynes. He was remanded in custody and later appeared at Crown Court for sentencing.
Community Reaction and Police Statement
The fatal shooting has caused concern among local residents, as the incident took place at a busy transport hub. An IOPC spokesperson acknowledged the public’s need for answers:
“We know the community will want answers quickly, and our investigators are working hard to establish the facts. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Joyce and all those affected by this tragic incident.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that a police cordon outside the station has now been lifted. A spokesperson stated:
“We would like to thank local businesses, residents, and commuters for their support and cooperation during this time.”
Public Response
The shooting has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with some users expressing relief that officers acted to protect the public, while others questioned whether lethal force was necessary. The IOPC’s independent investigation aims to clarify the circumstances and determine whether police actions were justified.
Next Steps
The investigation remains ongoing. Officers who attended the scene are currently being treated as witnesses. The IOPC plans to meet with Joyce’s family to discuss their role and will continue to update them throughout the investigation.
Residents and commuters who witnessed the incident are encouraged to contact the IOPC to assist with the inquiry.
