Indian airports have been placed on high alert following heightened tensions with Pakistan amid military operations under Operation Sindoor, prompting the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to issue emergency directives nationwide.
Airport Security Tightened Nationwide
Effective immediately, all passengers must undergo Secondary Ladder Point Checks (SLPC) at boarding gates. Visitor entry to terminal buildings has also been banned at all domestic and international airports across the country.
Airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air, have urged travelers to arrive at least three hours before departure to accommodate additional screening measures. Only one 7kg cabin bag is permitted per passenger.
Drone Activity and Retaliatory Strikes
The measures follow reports of Pakistani-origin drones near Jammu airport and confirmed air strikes by India targeting air defence systems in Lahore. Sounds resembling blasts sent panic through Jammu city Thursday night.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) are actively monitoring the situation, especially at 27 affected airports.
Airlines Issue Public Advisories
- Air India: “In light of BCAS orders, all passengers are advised to reach airports at least three hours before scheduled departure.
- IndiGo: “Heightened security measures are being implemented across airports. Please plan your journey accordingly.
- Akasa Air: “Only one hand baggage of up to 7 kg will be permitted. Carry valid government ID for terminal entry.”
Defence Ministry: No Casualties Reported
In a statement, the Defence PRO in Jammu confirmed:
“Pakistani-origin drones and missiles targeted military stations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur. Threats were neutralised using kinetic and non-kinetic measures. No casualties reported.”
Flights Suspended, Operations Disrupted
SriLankan Airlines announced a temporary suspension of flights to Pakistan, while other international carriers are expected to reassess routes over Pakistani and northern Indian airspace.
