A discarded cigarette is to blame for a fire that filled a Colchester home with smoke and spread dangerously to a gas main earlier today, prompting an urgent warning from firefighters.
Crews were called to the scene at a terrace property in Colchester, where they found decking ablaze and thick smoke pouring from the home. Firefighters swiftly tackled the flames and evacuated nearby homes as a precaution.
Gas Main Risk Raises Alarm
The fire, which started outside, quickly spread and reached the property’s gas main, increasing the risk of explosion.
“This fire could have been far more serious. With warmer weather, it only takes one ember from a cigarette to ignite nearby materials,” said an Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.

The blaze is believed to have been caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette. Firefighters are reminding smokers that even a small ember can spark disaster — especially in dry conditions.
