Emergency Speed Restrictions to Affect Rail Services Between East Croydon and Burgess Hill Due to Heatwave
Rail passengers travelling between East Croydon and Burgess Hill should prepare for delays and service alterations as emergency speed restrictions are implemented due to high temperatures across the South East.
Where and When
From 10am to 7pm on Monday 30 June and Tuesday 1 July, trains on the London–Brighton mainline will be subject to reduced speed limits, aimed at protecting the railway infrastructure as temperatures soar to 34°C.
Affected Rail Operators and Route Changes
The Southern and Gatwick Express networks are particularly impacted. Key alterations include:
- Gatwick Express:
Service limited to London Victoria ↔ Gatwick Airport only - Southern Rail:
London Victoria ↔ Littlehampton via Hove services will now terminate at West Worthing
Services will resume from Worthing back toward London
Expect fewer trains between Littlehampton and Brighton
Ticket Flexibility
Passengers with affected tickets can use alternate services without penalty:
- Gatwick ↔ Brighton: Use Thameslink or Southern services.
- Worthing ↔ Littlehampton: Use hourly Southern trains via Worthing.
