Fire crews are continuing to tackle a major blaze at Holt Heath after a major incident was declared yesterday.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said multiple crews remain at the scene, working to contain the flames, protect nearby properties, and prevent further spread. Around 69 hectares of heathland have been affected.
Firefighters are also still in attendance at Newton Heath, near Swanage, where a separate blaze has been burning since last Sunday, destroying 21 hectares.
While investigators believe the Newton Heath fire was started deliberately, the cause of the Holt Heath blaze remains unknown.
An Amber wildfire alert has been issued for the coming days as high temperatures and dry conditions increase the risk of further fires.
A fire service spokesperson said:
“We’re urging the public to be vigilant and take extra care. Please extinguish cigarettes properly, avoid using BBQs or open flames on heathland or in open spaces, and take all litter home with you.”
The public are reminded that if they spot a fire, they should get to a safe location, note the fire’s position, call 999 immediately, and never attempt to tackle large fires themselves.
