A 23-year-old woman who fled the war in Ukraine for a new life in the United States was fatally stabbed aboard a train in North Carolina, authorities have reported.
The victim, identified as Iryna Zarutska, was discovered with multiple stab wounds shortly before 10 p.m. on August 22. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suspect Charged with Murder
The suspect, Decarlos Brown, 34, sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the attack. He was initially treated at Atrium Health before being released into police custody a Weekweek later. Brown now faces a charge of first-degree murder.
Records from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office indicate that Brown has a history of arrests for various offenses, including assault. Authorities believe he may be homeless.
Community Shocked by the Violence
The brutal killing has sent shockwaves through both the local community and the Ukrainian diaspora, as Zarutska had sought refuge in the U.S. to escape the conflict in her home country.
