Yeti Television is thrilled to announce its latest commission from Channel 4 for “Car Boot Kings,” a documentary produced under Channel 4’s First Cut initiative, aimed at supporting new directors in their first foray into broadcast TV.

Fuelled by the UK’s enduring love for a good bargain and the economic downturn’s impact on people’s wallets, car boot sales are experiencing a resurgence. “Car Boot Kings” delves into the world of two lifelong friends who have seized the opportunity, drawing in an astonishing nine thousand traders and buyers weekly, right in their front yard.

JT and Andrew, affectionately known as the “Car Boot Kings,” oversee the operation of the largest car boot sale in the wild West Midlands. While much of the nation sleeps, thousands converge on their fields in pursuit of deals, looking to sell preloved items or unearth treasures that can be flipped for profit. These sprawling markets spring to life within hours, offering a vast array of goods.

For many participants, the car boot sale provides more than just a way to earn an extra pound; it serves as a lifeline. Many regulars rely on the additional income to put food on the table and provide pocket money for their children. However, for the Kings, maintaining the satisfaction of bargain-hunters who are tightening their belts while ensuring a healthy profit margin presents a constant challenge. Moreover, with unpredictable weather during the short summer season, the question looms: can both booters and Kings thrive?

Siân Price, Creative Director of Yeti, shared her enthusiasm for the project, saying, “As a seasoned car-booter myself, I’m delighted to be bringing the wonderful characters and stories bound up in this world to the screen. JT & Andrew really are one of a kind! We’re also thrilled to be able to support up-and-coming director Cam Bang Peter Tat in his first single documentary for Channel 4 as part of the First Cut scheme.”

Janine Thomas, Commissioning Editor for Channel 4, praised the film, describing it as “charming and curious.” She emphasised that “Car Boot Kings” upholds the First Cut tradition of character-driven filmmaking while examining the current cost of living crisis through the lens of an entertaining and extraordinary car boot sale.

Shooting Producer/Director, Cam Bang Peter Tat, expressed his excitement for the opportunity, saying, “Having worked in the TV industry for years, I’ve found it very difficult to get the opportunity to produce my own one-hour documentary, so getting a First Cut with Yeti was perfect.” Tat, along with two other filmmakers, secured the role by presenting a compelling two-page treatment to the commissioner.

“Car Boot Kings” is scheduled to premiere on Channel 4 in October, offering viewers a captivating glimpse into the world of bargain-hunting, community, and entrepreneurship at these unique car boot sales.
