A man from Bexley has been charged following a stabbing incident on a Croydon bus. The attack occurred on June 4 during an argument over seating on a Route N64 bus.
The altercation escalated when a passenger allegedly stabbed a 50-year-old man several times in the leg before disembarking at East Croydon train station. The victim later sought treatment for his knife wounds at a local hospital and reported the incident to the police.
After a media appeal, officers arrested 21-year-old Damian Howes of Haldane Road, Bexley, on July 14, more than a month after the attack. Howes has been charged with Section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH) and possession of an offensive weapon. He is scheduled to appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on July 15.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and officers are appealing for anyone with further information to come forward. Those with information can contact the police on 101, quoting reference 923/04June24, or Crimestoppers for anonymous reports.
Detective Inspector Jonathan Potter of the Met’s Roads and Transport Command emphasized the importance of witnesses coming forward. “This was a violent attack on a busy London bus, and I am sure that there are witnesses to the incident who have not yet come forward. I urge those people to get in touch without delay.”
He also highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat knife crime in the city. “Alongside our partners, we are working hard to reduce violent crime and to educate people about the serious consequences attached to knife crime. Some may mistakenly believe that they will be respected if they carry a knife, but the reality is that in any conflict, the presence of a knife will place everyone, including the knife carrier, in danger.”
