A Etihad Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (A6-BLN) carrying 289 passengers was forced to abort take-off this afternoon at Melbourne Airport (MEL) after a landing gear malfunction caused smoke and damage to two of the aircraft’s wheels.

The incident occurred on Runway 34 on January 5, 2025, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Fortunately, all passengers and crew on board are safe.

Etihad Airways Statement

A spokesperson for Etihad Airways confirmed the incident, stating:
“The flight crew decided to halt the take-off for technical reasons. The aircraft was safely brought to a stop on the runway, and emergency services attended as a precaution.”

Emergency Response and Airport Operations

Following the aborted take-off, emergency services quickly arrived on the scene to assess the situation. The affected aircraft remained on the runway for a period while airport officials inspected the damage and ensured safety protocols were followed.

Melbourne Airport authorities confirmed that runway operations were briefly affected, but flights have since resumed. Passengers on board the affected aircraft were deplaned safely, and alternative travel arrangements are being made.

Investigation Underway

Aviation safety regulators and Etihad Airways engineers are now investigating the cause of the landing gear malfunction to determine whether further inspections or maintenance actions are required before the aircraft is cleared to fly again.

This incident highlights the importance of airline safety protocols, with the quick decision-making by the flight crew ensuring that no injuries were reported.

Passengers who were booked on the flight are advised to check with Etihad Airways for further updates regarding rescheduling and alternative travel options.
