A St George’s Day fete in East Sussex was dramatically evacuated after a man suffered an electric shock when a bungee ride was set up underneath a high-voltage pylon.

The incident occurred this morning at Markstakes Common, near Chailey, where the annual event was being held by the Chailey Bonfire Society to raise funds for their Christmas fireworks display and party.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 11am. A man in his 20s was taken to hospital as a precaution, while two others were treated on site for minor injuries.

Organiser Yasmin Tomlinson posted on Facebook:

“I’m really sorry to let everyone know but due to a serious incident we are having to evacuate our fete and postpone our event. We are so sorry and so sad.”

Eyewitness Linda Truluck reported hearing a “massive bang” and seeing smoke coming from the ride after metal poles allegedly touched the power lines. She added, “Thankfully no one was hurt.”

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service said:

“Three people were assessed at the scene and one was taken to hospital for further treatment. It did not appear they were in a serious condition.”

Sussex Police also confirmed their attendance:

Police assisted emergency services with a medical incident at an event in Markstakes Corner, Chailey. It is understood that a man in his 20s sustained an electric shock and was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The event was immediately abandoned, and a full review is expected to take place into the circumstances of the incident.

The Chailey Bonfire Society has not yet announced when the event will be rescheduled.
