A knife attack in broad daylight has left one person dead and another injured in central Croydon this morning, prompting a major emergency response and renewed public concern over violent crime in the area.
Metropolitan Police were called at 09:07hrs to Frith Road, near Surrey Street Market, following multiple reports of a stabbing in an alleyway next to Subway, opposite the Holiday Inn Express.
Emergency services, including London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, attended the scene. Two victims were found with stab wounds. Despite efforts by paramedics, one victim is believed to have died at the scene. The second victim was treated for injuries — their condition has not yet been confirmed.

Police Confirm Arrest
A man has been arrested in connection with the attack and is currently in police custody. Officers have erected a crime scene cordon as forensic teams begin a detailed examination of the area.
In a statement issued at 11am, Scotland Yard said:
“Police were called to Frith Road at 09:07hrs on Saturday, 31 May following reports of a stabbing.
Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance are in attendance.
A man is currently in custody and a cordon remains in place at the location.”
Scene Attracts Public Attention
The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight on a busy Saturday morning, occurred just yards from Church Street and Surrey Street market — a bustling area full of shoppers and commuters. Passers-by described the aftermath as chaotic, with police vehicles, ambulances and air ambulance crews all present.
Community Concerns Resurface
This latest fatal incident has triggered renewed concerns about knife crime in Croydon, especially following the high-profile murder of 22-year-old Rijkaard Siafa on Fellmongers Yard in April 2024 — just metres from today’s crime scene. Two men were jailed in that case earlier this year, though one suspect remains at large.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant footage is urged to contact Met Police on 101, quoting the time and location. Anonymous information can be shared via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
