A section of the A201 New Kent Road has been closed in both directions this morning following a serious road traffic collision near Elephant and Castle.
The incident, which occurred between A3 Newington Causeway and Meadow Row, has prompted an emergency response and the immediate closure of the road while accident investigation work is carried out.
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that the road is currently shut to all traffic, and a number of bus routes are being diverted as a result. Affected services include Routes 1, 53, 63, 172, 188, 363, 415, 453, and night services N1, N53, and N63.
A TfL spokesperson said:
“Due to a serious incident on New Kent Road, the road is closed in both directions between Newington Causeway and Meadow Row. Diversions are in place for multiple bus routes, and drivers are advised to avoid the area.”
Motorists have been urged to seek alternative routes, and congestion is being reported on surrounding roads, particularly around Elephant and Castle roundabout and Borough Road.
Emergency services remain at the scene. No further details have been released regarding the number of vehicles involved or any injuries.
TfL and the Metropolitan Police have been contacted for further comment.
Drivers and commuters should check travel updates before setting out and allow extra time for their journeys.
