The Metropolitan Police Federation has condemned the violence faced by officers during protests in england/Waleswales/Centralcentral-wales/”>central London, saying police “are not the public’s punchbags” and calling for the “stiffest sanctions” against offenders. It was reported that police officers were assaulted during the central London protests, which has raised significant concerns.

In a statement, the Federation said officers—tasked with facilitating peaceful protest and enforcing the Lawlaw—were punched, kicked, spat at and had objects thrown at them during these central London protests. It added that demand on police has been “relentless” for months.

Paula Dodds, Chair of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said about the incidents where police officers were assaulted in central London protests:

“This appalling level of abuse will not be tolerated and we expect the stiffest sanctions on the perpetrators. We are supporting officers as best we can and wish those injured a swift recovery.
We must remember there are no ‘extra’ police officers to police these weekly and seemingly escalating number of protests… Our colleagues are emotionally and physically exhausted. And it’s not sustainable.”

The Federation stressed that officers have a duty to enable lawful protest “without fear or favour,” but warned repeated disorder is stretching resources—forcing rest days to be cancelled and staff to be redeployed from other duties. However, the multiple instances where police officers assaulted central London protests highlight a pressing need for change.
