A major fire broke out at an industrial estate on Willoughby Drive, off Rainham Road South, Dagenham, sending a massive plume of black smoke into the sky that was visible for miles around.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
The London Fire Brigade was called to the scene around 2 pm today, with approximately 70 firefighters from Dagenham, Barking, Wennington, Hornchurch, Romford, and surrounding stations working tirelessly to control the inferno.
The fire erupted among three containers, burning vehicles, and scrap metal, prompting over 50 calls from the public who spotted the towering chimney of smoke.
Quick Action Prevents Disaster
Firefighters successfully removed two gas cylinders from the scene to prevent them from exploding. Thanks to their rapid response and coordinated efforts, the fire was brought under control by around 4:20 pm.
A 32-metre turntable ladder was deployed to douse the flames from above, helping firefighters reach the height of the blaze efficiently.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Public Safety Advisory
Station Commander Mel Anderson, who was at the scene, described the incident as a “very visible fire“ that generated significant amounts of smoke.
“Whilst the smoke has now greatly reduced, we advise people in the area to continue to keep their windows and doors closed at this time,” he said.
He also urged motorists to avoid Rainham Road South due to road closures while emergency crews remained on-site.

Local residents expressed relief that no one was hurt, while some shared drone footage of the fire on social media, capturing the dramatic sight of thick black smoke towering over the area. The incident has caused significant disruption in the vicinity, and drivers are being advised to seek alternative routes.
