Motorists using the M25 anti-clockwise between Junction 6 (Godstone) and Junction 5 (Sevenoaks) are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time due to a lorry fire that has caused significant disruption.
Closure Details
The incident began around 11:40 am when a lorry fire forced the closure of the motorway in the anti-clockwise direction. Emergency services, including Kent Fire Service and National Highways officers, responded swiftly to the scene. The fire caused major traffic delays throughout the area.
Lorry Moved and Traffic Update
After nearly two hours, at approximately 1:45 pm, the lorry was moved off the motorway, and clockwise traffic was released shortly after. However, the anti-clockwise carriageway remains closed as emergency crews continue to assess the situation and clean up the area.
A spokesperson for National Highways stated:
“If this closure affects your planned route, please allow extra time for your journey. Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative routes.”
Diversion Route
Drivers are being advised to follow the “Hollow Square” diversion symbol displayed on road signs and take the following alternative routes:
- Exit the M25 at Junction 6.
- At the Godstone Interchange, take the third exit onto the A22 towards East Grinstead.
- At the A22/A25 roundabout, take the first exit onto the A25 towards Westerham.
- Follow the A25 through Limpsfield, Oxted, Westerham, Brasted, and Sundridge.
- At the traffic signal junction A25/M25, turn left to re-join the M25 towards Dartford Crossing.
Travel Advice
Motorists are urged to check traffic updates before setting off and to follow diversion routes carefully. National Highways has advised that extra travel time may be necessary and has encouraged drivers to re-route or delay their journeys if possible.

Public Reaction
Commuters and local residents have expressed frustration over the unexpected delays. One driver posted on social media:
“Stuck on the M25 for over an hour because of the fire—hope everyone is safe.”
Another tweeted:
“Just saw fire crews still dealing with the aftermath. Grateful for their hard work but wish I’d planned a different route!”
Ongoing Situation
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have not reported any injuries at this time. The anti-clockwise carriageway closure is expected to remain in place for several more hours as clean-up efforts continue.
Motorists are thanked for their patience and cooperation as emergency crews work to fully reopen the road. Updates will follow as the situation develops.
