A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a dramatic rescue operation by police officers in Kensington, as body-worn camera footage captures their heroic efforts to save residents from a blazing inferno.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Friday, March 1, at Emperor’s Gate, SW7, where officers from the Metropolitan Police rushed to the scene of a raging fire. Body-worn camera footage released today depicts the courageous actions of the officers as they bravely kicked down doors and entered the burning building to rescue occupants trapped inside.
Superintendent Jill Horsfall, overseeing policing in Kensington & Chelsea, commended the swift and fearless response of the officers, stating, “The bravery and professionalism of the Met officers who responded so rapidly to this terrifying fire show the very best of policing.
The blaze erupted shortly after midnight, prompting a rapid and coordinated response from emergency services, including the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service. Despite the perilous conditions, officers worked alongside their colleagues to evacuate residents from the six flats affected by the fire.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the fire being treated as suspicious. On Sunday, March 3, a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody as authorities continue their inquiries.
While the swift action of the emergency services undoubtedly prevented further harm, the incident resulted in smoke inhalation injuries for seven police officers and six residents. Fortunately, all affected individuals were promptly transported to the hospital for treatment and have since been discharged, with no reports of serious injuries.
