Anti-ULEZ activists, known as The Blade Runners, have launched a series of attacks on surveillance cameras across London following Sadiq Khan’s re-election as Mayor of London. The group’s actions were reportedly fueled by anger over Khan’s policies, particularly the controversial Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

In a spree of vandalism, The Blade Runners targeted ULEZ cameras in various locations across the capital, including Ickenham, Northwood, Feltham, Hounslow, and Yiewsley. Their destructive actions involved cutting down poles, spray-painting cameras, and even setting them on fire.

According to reports, the attacks occurred in the aftermath of Khan’s resounding victory in the mayoral election, where he secured a third term by a significant margin over his closest rival, Susan Hall of the Conservatives.

Blade Runner Matt Hardy, one of the activists involved, described the vandalism as a response to what he perceived as “tyranny reigning over us.” In videos posted on social media, Hardy mocked Khan and smeared excrement on one of the vandalized cameras.

The Metropolitan Police recorded a staggering 795 crimes related to ULEZ cameras between April and September the previous year, including theft and damage. Despite the group’s efforts, Transport for London (TfL) emphasized that vandalizing cameras would not impede the ULEZ’s operation, as damaged cameras are promptly repaired or replaced.

TfL issued a stern warning, stating that vandalism poses risks of prosecution and injury to perpetrators while jeopardizing public safety. The organization reiterated its commitment to maintaining an extensive camera network to ensure the effective implementation of the ULEZ scheme.

The incidents highlight the contentious nature of environmental policies like the ULEZ and the passionate responses they evoke among certain segments of the population. As tensions persist, authorities remain vigilant in addressing acts of vandalism and maintaining public safety across London.
