A property in Strood, connected to a string of incidents involving violence, suspected drug misuse, and antisocial behaviour, has been slapped with a closure order by authorities. Kent Police successfully applied for the order at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday, February 16, 2024, following persistent complaints from residents in the vicinity of Bligh Way.
The closure order, effective for three months, prohibits any unauthorized individuals from entering the premises during this period, under the threat of fines and potential imprisonment. Local officers, in collaboration with the housing association that owns the property, ensured its evacuation and subsequently secured it. A prominently displayed warning sign on the door serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences of trespassing.
Inspector Mick Hayes, representing the Medway Community Safety Unit, highlighted the prolonged distress experienced by residents due to disturbances and antisocial conduct linked to the property in question. Despite previous warnings issued to the occupant, the situation failed to improve, prompting law enforcement to take decisive action.
The closure order utilized legislation under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, and MHS Homes will be assuming possession of the premises,” Inspector Hayes explained. He emphasized the commitment of police officers, in conjunction with Medway Council, to combat disorderly households that negatively impact the well-being of local communities.
“Our officers, along with Medway Council, are committed in tackling the scourge of disruptive behaviour that blights the lives of residents. Those who persist in engaging in chaotic and often criminal lifestyles, causing harm to their neighbourhoods, can expect a swift and firm response from Kent Police,” Inspector Hayes concluded.
The closure order serves as a decisive measure aimed at restoring peace and tranquillity to the affected area, underscoring the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and community stakeholders in safeguarding the welfare of residents and maintaining public safety.
