A man who stole cash from a disabled pensioner in Sevenoaks, just days after being released from prison, has been sentenced to over two years in jail.
Ambrose Treeby, 40, of Queen Street, Paddock Wood, targeted a 90-year-old woman on 15 September 2024 after knocking on her door and entering her home uninvited. He used a distraction tactic to steal money from her purse under the guise of concern for a neighbor.
The Incident
Treeby initially approached a neighbor of the victim around lunchtime, claiming to have previously visited her home to collect scrap metal. After leaving empty-handed, he moved on to the victim’s home.

Once inside, Treeby pretended to be worried about the neighbour and requested her phone number. He produced a £20 note and asked for change, observing the victim as she checked her handbag. When her back was turned, he took £30 from her purse and left the property.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The police investigation quickly identified Treeby through CCTV footage, which showed his white Citroën entering the victim’s road. He was captured on camera walking toward her home.
Treeby was arrested on 17 September and remanded in custody after appearing in court the next day.
Court and Sentencing
At Maidstone Crown Court, Treeby pleaded guilty to burglary. On 19 December, he was sentenced to two years and nearly five months’ imprisonment.
Police Statement
Detective Constable Rosie Acton said:
“Ambrose Treeby is a callous and heartless individual, who within just a week of being released from prison for similar offending, has once again preyed upon a victim he perceived would be vulnerable and easy pickings.
“Sadly, people like Treeby target older people because they are often more trusting. They exploit them in the worst possible way without a single thought to the devastating impact their crimes have on their victims’ confidence and wellbeing.”
The case serves as a reminder for communities to remain vigilant and look out for vulnerable neighbors, especially older individuals who may be more susceptible to such crimes.
