A 22-year-old driver from Braintree, Essex has been banned from driving for six months after being caught travelling at almost twice the speed limit and swerving onto the wrong side of the road in a bid to evade a speed camera.

The incident, which occurred on January 15, 2023, saw the driver clocked at 55mph in a 30mph zone. Officers reviewing the case discovered that the motorist had deliberately driven onto the wrong side of the road in an attempt to avoid being captured by the speed camera.

Following an investigation by Essex Police’s Roads Policing Support Team, the driver was brought before Basildon Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to careless driving.

The court heard that the driver’s reckless actions posed a serious hazard to other road users and could have resulted in a serious accident or injury. As a result, he was handed six penalty points on his license, triggering a six-month driving ban. Additionally, he was ordered to pay over £450 in fines.

A spokesperson for Essex Police emphasized the importance of road safety, stating, “Deliberately driving on the wrong side of the road posed a very serious hazard for any other road user and could have resulted in someone being seriously injured.

The incident serves as a reminder for all drivers to adhere to the Highway Code and traffic laws to ensure the safety of themselves and others on the roadways.
