A major blaze broke out behind a residential property on Marlpit Lane, Coulsdon this evening, prompting a significant emergency response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) after multiple 999 calls reported flames and a suspected gas cylinder explosion.

Four fire engines were dispatched to the scene, with crews tackling the fire.

A 25-metre safety cordon has been put in place following reports that a gas cylinder exploded prior to the arrival of fire crews. The LFB confirmed that specialist teams from Dowgate Fire Station have been called in to investigate the cause of the fire and to rule out foul play.

Police and Fire Services On Scene
Officers from the Metropolitan Police are also in attendance to assist with cordon management and public safety. The LFB has launched a full investigation into the incident, which continues tonight.
Due to reports of an explosion and the presence of gas cylinders, our crews responded with urgency and extreme caution,” a fire brigade source at the scene said. “Specialist units are now working to determine exactly what happened.”

Road Closures and Travel Disruption
As of 7:30pm, Marlpit Lane is blocked in both directions at the junction of Coulsdon Rise, affecting local traffic and public transport services.
TfL Bus Routes 404 and 466 have been diverted due to the incident:
