An investigation has been launched after seven Northumbria Police officers were injured in a multi-vehicle collision during a high-speed pursuit on the A1 northbound near the Derwent Haugh Road junction in Gateshead in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred shortly before 2.30am and involved a dark grey BMW M Sport, which failed to stop for officers, triggering a short but intense pursuit.

Collision Involving Multiple Police Vehicles

During the chase, the BMW and five police vehicles were involved in a serious collision. Emergency services responded immediately, and seven officers were taken to hospital.

In an update shared on social media, Northumbria Police confirmed:

  • Four officers have since been discharged.
  • Two officers remain under observation.
  • One officer is receiving treatment for a leg injury.

“We wish all of our injured officers a full and speedy recovery,” the force said.

Arrests Made at the Scene

Two people inside the BMW were not seriously injured, according to police.

A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and a woman in her 20s was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving. Both remain in police custody.

Major Road Closure and Ongoing Investigation

A section of the A1 remains closed in both directions, with diversions in place:

  • Northbound traffic is being diverted from the Derwent Haugh Road junction.
  • Southbound traffic is being redirected from the A69 roundabout.

Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward—particularly those who may have seen the BMW M Sport before the crash or captured CCTV or dashcam footage of the pursuit or collision.

“If you witnessed what happened or have footage of the events leading up to the collision, please contact us,” a spokesperson said. “Every detail helps.”
