A Tesco Express worker in Dagenham has been taken to hospital after being sprayed with a substance in what is being described as a “chemical incident.”

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called to the Tesco store on Oxlow Lane at 3:49 PM on July 31 following reports of an injured man. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) also responded to the incident, dispatching two fire engines from Dagenham and Ilford stations.

According to police, a member of the store staff was involved in an altercation with a customer. The customer allegedly left the store but returned a short while later and sprayed the male worker with an unknown substance.

An LFB spokesperson stated: “Firefighters delivered immediate emergency care on-scene to one man and worked to make the scene safe. The brigade was called at 3:53 PM and the incident was over for firefighters at 4:25 PM.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where his injuries have been confirmed as non-life-threatening. Police enquiries are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.
