A devastating tram crash in Manchester city centre has left a three-year-old girl dead, as police continue an urgent search for the van driver who fled the scene.

The tragic incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Mosley Street, when a Metrolink tram collided with a van, causing it to veer onto the pavement and strike the young pedestrian. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the hospital, the little girl sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Driver Fled the Scene: Police on Manhunt

The van driver involved in the incident fled the scene following the crash, sparking a widespread manhunt. GMP has since identified the suspect and is working relentlessly to bring him into custody.

Assistant Chief Constable Stephanie Parker addressed the public yesterday, expressing condolences to the family:
“Firstly, I would like to send my deepest sympathies to the family of the victim. This is a tragic incident where a young girl has sadly lost her life despite the responding officers’ best attempts to save her.

She assured residents that the tram crash appears to be an isolated incident with no broader threat to the community.
“I would like to thank residents and commuters for their patience amid city centre disruptions. We are doing everything we can to bring the responsible individual to justice,” Parker added.

Emergency Services Response and Investigation

Emergency services, including paramedics, firefighters, and multiple GMP units, quickly arrived at the scene following reports of the crash. Witnesses described the chaotic aftermath, with emergency personnel working tirelessly to assist the victims and secure the area.

City centre roads were temporarily closed as forensic teams examined the scene and officers canvassed the area for CCTV footage and witness statements.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) confirmed the tram service was suspended in the area for several hours while investigations continued.

Public Appeal for Information

GMP is urging anyone who witnessed the incident, especially those who may have dashcam or mobile phone footage, to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.

“We know the city centre was busy this morning, and we believe there are witnesses who may have seen the van driver before or after the incident. We urge them to contact us as soon as possible,” said Detective Inspector Rachel Grant, leading the inquiry.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Greater Manchester Police at 0161 856 4741, quoting log number 1086 of 22/02/25, or via LiveChat at gmp.police.uk. Alternatively, tips can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

City Mourns the Loss

The tragic death has sent shockwaves through Manchester. Flowers and tributes have been left at the scene, with residents expressing grief and outrage over the senseless loss.

“As a mother, I can’t imagine the pain this family is going through. It’s heartbreaking,” said Clare Atkinson, a local resident who laid flowers near the site.

Local leaders, including Mayor Andy Burnham, also extended their condolences:
“Manchester is mourning the loss of an innocent life today. Our thoughts are with the family affected by this terrible tragedy. We will do everything possible to support them and ensure justice is served.”
