Two individuals have been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into the recent deaths in South Shields, Northumbria Police confirmed today.

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s have been taken into custody on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs. Both suspects remain in police custody as enquiries continue.

Our investigation is at a very early stage, and we would ask the public to avoid speculation both online and in the community, which could prove harmful to our investigation,” a Northumbria Police spokesperson said.

Earlier, police warned residents of a potentially dangerous batch of drugs circulating in the area following three fatalities. The exact cause of these deaths is still being determined, and it remains unconfirmed whether they are directly linked to the suspected drug batch.

Northumbria Police have issued a call for information from the public:

Anyone with information is asked to contact us by sending a private message on social media, visiting the live chat on their website, or by completing a crime update form, quoting reference: NP-20240716-0556. Those who are unable to contact us this way can call 101.”

The investigation continues to be a high priority for Northumbria Police, as they work diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding these tragic deaths and prevent further harm to the community.
