Two women were taken to hospital after a fairground ride malfunctioned and crashed to the ground in Centenary Square on Thursday evening.
Emergency services, including police, fire crews, and paramedics, rushed to the scene at 7:29 pm following reports of an incident involving the 55m tall City Flyer ride, described as one of the tallest rides in the region.

Ride Malfunction
West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that the ride “dropped to ground level whilst in operation,” causing panic among those on board. Images show tangled wires from at least two gondolas, suggesting a mechanical failure.
West Midlands Ambulance Service reported that two women sustained injuries, though their conditions are not thought to be serious. They were taken to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital for further treatment.
An additional 11 individuals, including nine women and three men, were assessed by paramedics at the scene and discharged.

Eyewitness Accounts
Witnesses described scenes of chaos following the incident. One bystander reported seeing “girls who appeared to be injured” walking away, including one who seemed to have a facial injury.
Lilly Nitsch, 18, from Leamington Spa, expressed her shock:
“That’s one of my favourite rides growing up. It makes me think of the times you’ve been on rides like that. It makes me feel lucky.”
Another witness, Amelie Huet, 18, was at a nearby bar during the incident. She told the BBC:
“We heard sirens and went out to the balcony. We saw ambulances, police cars, and fire engines. Someone told us the structure dropped and someone fell out.”
Area Cordoned Off
West Midlands Police have cordoned off the area between the ice rink, the library, and the Rep Theatre. They have advised the public to avoid the site as investigations continue.
A police spokesperson confirmed a “small number of people are being treated at the scene by paramedics.”

The operator has yet to issue a statement, and the cause of the malfunction is under investigation.
Public Safety Concerns
The incident has raised concerns about safety at temporary fairground attractions, especially during the busy festive season. Authorities will likely conduct a full inspection of the ride and its operations to determine what went wrong.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
