Detectives have successfully used closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to identify a killer responsible for a brutal attack on a woman in Edmonton. Deka Omar, 24, was found guilty of murdering 58-year-old Susan Ioannou following a re-trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. On Thursday, June 6, Omar was sentenced to 23 years in prison at Inner London Crown Court.

Detective Inspector Jim Barry described Susan Ioannou as kind and generous, despite having little herself. Tragically, her kindness led her to help Omar, who ultimately turned on her in a violent manner within the safety of her own home.

The investigation began on February 21, 2022, when authorities received reports of a woman’s body found at a residential property on Church Street, N9. Susan Ioannou was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered traumatic head and chest injuries, including compression of the neck.

Detectives Use CCTV to Identify Killer in Brutal Edmonton Attack

Through meticulous analysis of CCTV footage and witness statements, detectives traced Omar’s movements to Susan’s address on the night before her body was discovered. It was revealed that Omar had befriended Susan, visiting her property on multiple occasions. Exploiting Susan’s kindness, Omar used her to fund her own drug addiction.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but Susan’s injuries were the result of a brutal assault that included strangulation, stomping, and heavy blows to her face. Omar also stole Susan’s phone before leaving the scene.

Following the attack, Omar spoke with several people, asking them to check on Susan. She even suggested that “something may have happened” to her. Subsequently, Omar was arrested on suspicion of murder on February 22, 2022, and later charged with the same offence on February 26, 2023.

Detective Inspector Barry expressed gratitude to Susan’s friends who assisted throughout the investigation, ensuring justice for Susan. He emphasised that while murder is not common, its impact on loved ones is devastating.
