Prince Andrew has suffered a major royal snub. King Charles III has cancelled two of the Duke of York’s most prestigious honours, wiping them from the record books.
Knighthoods Cancelled: Order of the Garter and Royal Victorian Order
The monarch has annulled Andrew’s appointment as a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter, which he had held since 2006. His name will be removed from the order’s official register – a humiliating blow for the once-prominent royal.
Charles didn’t stop there. He also revoked Andrew’s 2011 Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. These moves come after Andrew lost his remaining royal titles, leaving him a commoner stripped of royal status.
Military Ranks Axed but Falklands Medal Stays
The Government, via Defence Secretary John Healey, confirmed that Andrew’s honorary vice admiral rank has also been scrapped. However, Buckingham Palace revealed the King will not take away Andrew’s Falklands War campaign medal.
Healey explained the Ministry of Defence defers to the royal family on military decorations. Andrew will keep his Falklands medal and other service awards from his 22-year naval career starting in 1981.
Backstory: Fallout from Sexual Abuse Scandal
In January 2022, the late Queen Elizabeth II stripped Andrew of all military roles and charitable patronages following a legal settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse. Andrew denies the allegations, and the settlement was not an admission of guilt.
“This decision came after a petition signed by over 150 veterans demanding Andrew’s military ties be removed,”
Among lost roles was Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, which now belongs to Queen Camilla.
These latest cuts highlight a relentless royal distancing from Andrew amid continuing controversy.
