From tomorrow, two Coastguard search and rescue helicopters will be flying out of Manston Airport, marking a major comeback for the site in the SAR scene.
Back to Manston After Cost Row
Since 2015, HM Coastguard’s operator Bristow had been based at Lydd Airport. But a fallout over costs forced the crews to temporarily shift to Hampshire. Now the service confirms a permanent move to Manston.
Top-Notch Facilities and Location
The Bristow Group operates AW139 helicopters for HM Coastguard and will use Manston for crew swaps, refuelling, and all rescue operations. A spokesperson said:
“We appreciate the airport’s cooperation and support in enabling these arrangements.
Manston Airport, which has previous SAR credentials, offers facilities that meet all safety and operational needs.
Its prime South East location allows us to provide uninterrupted, effective rescue service alongside other Coastguard teams.”
Airport Owner Welcomes Rescue Teams
Riveroak Strategic Partners (RSP), owners of Manston, said:
“RSP Manston is delighted to welcome the Bristow Search and Rescue team. We will ensure their move is as smooth and seamless as possible.”
Manston’s revival as a key Coastguard base is set to boost rescue capabilities across the South East. Keep watching this space!
