Hundreds of mourners are expected to gather in Folkestone to bid farewell to seven-year-old William Brown, who tragically lost his life in a suspected hit-and-run incident. The young boy’s funeral will be a solemn event marked by community support and heartfelt tributes.
William, affectionately known to his family and friends, will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 13, at 2pm, at the Church of St Mary and St Eanswythe. This location holds special significance as it is near the school William attended and where he frequently played.
The community rallied together to make this funeral possible, as the historic graveyard had been closed since 1855, and only the King had the authority to overturn the closure order issued by the Privy Council.
William’s mother, Laura Brown, took extraordinary measures to ensure her son’s final resting place aligned with the family’s wishes. On Christmas Day, she travelled to Sandringham, where the Royal family attended a church service, carrying a heartfelt letter to King Charles, seeking his assistance. Just days later, King Charles and members of the Privy Council announced their decision to support the family’s request.
The funeral procession will be led by a horse and carriage adorned in the colours of William’s beloved football team, Manchester United. The route will pass through Sapper Row, Sandgate Esplanade, the Road of Remembrance, and Tontine Street before arriving at St Eanswythe Church.
The Brown family extends an open invitation to the community, welcoming anyone who wishes to pay their respects and celebrate William’s life. They hope the service, which is expected to exceed the church’s 400-person capacity, will be shared online to accommodate everyone who wishes to participate.
William’s father, William Sr, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support received during this difficult time. He emphasized that the community’s unity is a testament to William’s message of love, peace, and unity.
The family’s deep appreciation extends to the police, who have assisted with the funeral procession, and the countless individuals who have reached out to offer support.
William Brown’s burial spot, near a cherished conker tree, holds particular significance, as it aligns perfectly with his wishes.
The wake will be held at William’s school, St Eanswythe’s C of E Primary School, where friends, family, and community members will gather to remember and celebrate the life of this young boy.
Regarding King Charles’s approval for William’s burial, Laura Brown expressed her profound gratitude, calling it a miracle that came at the right time. She lauded the King’s intervention as a gracious and wonderful act.
A 49-year-old man was arrested in Dymchurch nearly 24 hours after William’s tragic death. He faces multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice, and is currently on bail until March 6.
The community of Folkestone will come together on January 13 to remember William Brown and pay their respects to a young life taken too soon.
