A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck western Turkey, causing buildings to collapse and leaving residents trapped under rubble.
The quake hit at around 7.53pm local time (5.53pm UK time) on Sunday, 10 August, with its epicentre in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province, around 120 miles south of Istanbul.

The tremor struck at a depth of 11km, according to Turkish authorities.

At least one building has been destroyed, and emergency services are working to free people feared to be trapped inside. Search and rescue teams have been deployed to the affected areas, and images from the scene show residents digging through debris in an urgent bid to find survivors.

Balikesir, a popular holiday destination for domestic and international tourists, experienced widespread panic as residents fled into the streets. Tremors were felt in Istanbul and across neighbouring provinces.
No official casualty figures have been released, and authorities have warned that aftershocks are likely.
