Police have confirmed that 24 drivers will face prosecution after they were caught driving the wrong way along the M54 following a collision.
The motorway was closed at Junction 1 today (Saturday) to allow officers to work safely at the scene of a road traffic collision. Despite the closure, multiple motorists ignored instructions and drove against the flow of traffic.
Staffordshire Police, who were assisting West Midlands Police with the incident, said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“During the closure, 24 drivers made the dangerous decision to drive the wrong way down the motorway. All 24 will be prosecuted.”
The force reminded motorists that driving the wrong way on a motorway poses a serious risk not only to themselves but also to other road users and emergency services staff working at the scene.
The motorway has since been reopened.
