A man with a multimillion-pound property empire has been convicted for drug trafficking and money laundering following a proactive investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Richard Baxter, 50, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Kingston Crown Court on Friday, 18 October, to the following charges:

  • Conspiracy to supply heroin
  • Conspiracy to supply cocaine
  • Conspiracy to transfer criminal property (cash)

Baxter’s conviction highlights the Met’s ongoing efforts to combat drug crime and address concerns raised by London residents about drug dealing and its associated violence and anti-social behaviour.

In August 2024, Baxter was apprehended by Spanish police in Valencia and extradited back to the UK, where he was remanded in custody.

The Met’s specialist officers investigating criminal gangs discovered Baxter as a key figure in a network smuggling hundreds of kilos of cocaine and heroin into the UK. The operation also involved laundering money through various companies. Further investigations revealed that Baxter owned multiple properties across the south-east of England, including a home in Surrey and a holiday chalet. These assets, valued at approximately £1.5 million, have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Detective Constable David Lawn, who led the investigation, stated: “We have zero tolerance for anyone who engages in criminal activities and are committed to combating the sale of dangerous and illegal drugs which pose a threat to the public. The Met is deploying specialist resources to tackle drug criminality and make the capital a safer place to live. Baxter’s conviction sends out a strong message to those who seek to profit from the illegal drug trade – you will be held accountable for your actions in court.”

The Met Police is working closely with local communities as part of the “A New Met for London” initiative, which aims to tackle community crime and act on residents’ concerns to make London a safer place. The supply of drugs in London has severe consequences, including addiction, health risks, and an increase in violence and anti-social behaviour.

Residents are encouraged to report drug-related activities to help the police take swift action. In an emergency, call 999. For non-emergencies, contact 101 or report online. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Baxter is scheduled for sentencing at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday, 5 December.
