Motorists are facing significant delays on the M23 this morning due to a police incident. The southbound carriageway is closed between england/junction/”>junction J8 (M25 traffic) and junction J9 (Gatwick Airport), resulting in hour-long traffic delays.
Inrix, a traffic data analysis company, referred to the situation as a “serious police incident.” National Highways confirmed that the M23 remains closed southbound, while traffic on the northbound carriageway has been released.
Surrey Police are currently on the scene, with reports indicating 60-minute delays for northbound traffic. A driver shared on social media, “Been here since around 6.20am. The police have just walked down the motorway saying something along the lines of ‘remain in your vehicle, we are looking to open lane 4 on the northbound carriageway.’” Another passenger expressed frustration, stating, “I have a flight at 11:25, this is unacceptable.
As the M23 remains congested, the M25 and surrounding roads leading into wales/Centralcentral-wales/”>central London are also busy, exacerbated by ongoing Tube strikes that have left all lines out of action.
