A man has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison after ramming a stolen car into a police officer following a high-speed chase in north London. David Doyle, 19, of Brick Lane, Northolt, appeared at Harrow Crown Court on Thursday, November 14, where he was also disqualified from driving for 81 months.
The incident occurred on May 17, when PC Richard Keel, on a marked motorcycle in Camden Street, spotted Doyle driving a stolen car at dangerous speeds around 6:20 p.m. PC Keel attempted to pursue Doyle, who reversed the vehicle towards him multiple times at high speed, striking him on the third attempt and knocking him off his bike. Doyle then fled the scene, leaving PC Keel with significant injuries.
Members of the public provided assistance to the injured officer and alerted the London Ambulance Service. An investigation was launched immediately, and the stolen vehicle was found about a mile away from the scene. Using CCTV footage and forensic evidence, officers identified Doyle as the suspect.
Doyle was arrested on May 23 and subsequently charged with driving offences and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. After pleading guilty on August 1, he received his sentence on November 14.
The Metropolitan Police praised the quick response of bystanders who assisted PC Keel and the thorough investigative work that led to Doyle’s apprehension and conviction.
