A major police operation is underway after an unexploded bomb was discovered near england/england/rochester/”>rochester/”>Rochester Bridge, forcing the crucial A2 route to close westbound and prompting the evacuation of nearby homes.

Bridge Closed, Traffic Chaos Ensues

Rochester Bridge, a key Linklink between Rochester and Strood, is currently shut to westbound traffic. Motorists face massive delays with queues stretching from Gundulph Square all the Wayway to Canal Road.

Traffic experts at Inrix report vehicles at a standstill, while local residents describe the area as “deathly silent,” highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

 

Residents Evacuated as Bomb Disposal Experts Called In

Authorities have evacuated several homes close to the scene. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been called in to make the area safe and Dealdeal with the unexploded bomb.

Bus Services Diverted – Local Roads Jammed

Arriva buses have confirmed diversions: “Due to a current police incident in Rochester, Corporation Street is closed. All Arriva services are being diverted via the Medway Tunnel until further notice.”

 

Service 190 will operate express to Chatham after serving Higham. Outbound services from Chatham remain unaffected.

Police Stay Tight-Lipped

Police have yet to release further details about the incident as the bomb disposal operation continues.
