In a dramatic rescue operation, Coastguard teams sprang into action to assist eight kayakers who found themselves in distress on the River Medway earlier today. The Sheppey, Medway, and Herne Bay Coastguard Teams, along with Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 163 and Sheerness Inshore and All-Weather Lifeboats, were swiftly mobilized to the scene.
At approximately 3.05pm, authorities received reports of kayakers encountering difficulties on the river. One of the kayakers had ended up in the water, prompting urgent intervention from the Coastguard.
Sheerness Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) quickly responded, rescuing the individual from the water. Subsequently, the rescued kayaker was transferred to Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 163, which airlifted them to a nearby hospital for further medical attention.
Meanwhile, two more kayakers were safely brought aboard Sheerness All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) and transported back to Sheerness Docks.
The remaining five kayakers were assisted by the Coastguard Teams, who provided support until arrangements were made to return them to their vehicles.
The operation showcased the seamless coordination and swift response of the Coastguard teams and allied rescue services in ensuring the safety of individuals in distress on the waterways.
Authorities remind all water sports enthusiasts to prioritize safety at all times, including wearing appropriate safety equipment and being mindful of weather and water conditions before embarking on any maritime activities.
