Hilkiah McLeggan, 77, has been identified as the victim of a brutal knife attack that took place at East Street Market in Walworth, Southwark, leaving him dead and two other men seriously injured. The tragic incident occurred in front of shoppers on Sunday morning.
Musse Ali, 66, appeared in Croydon Magistrates’ %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_0%% on Tuesday, charged with Mr McLeggan's murder, as well as two counts of attempted murder and one count of knife possession. Ali, who has no fixed address, spoke only to confirm his %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_1%% and age through a Somalian interpreter. He was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_2%% for a bail hearing, with a plea hearing scheduled for December 10.
The attack unfolded at around 10:40 a.m., ending only when heroic stallholders reportedly fended off the alleged attacker with metal bars until %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_3%% arrived. One of the other victims remains in critical condition in the hospital, while the second is also seriously injured.
Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, the Southwark policing lead, described the incident as "horrific" and extended thanks to the "brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene." %%UKNIP_ANCHOR_4%% Yard confirmed that the attack is not believed to be terror-related and urged the public not to speculate on social media regarding a potential motive.
