A significant fire broke out at the council-owned Wendover Tower on Thurlow Street, SE17, part of the Aylesbury Estate, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Ten fire engines and an aerial ladder have been deployed to the scene after the London Fire Brigade received reports of a blaze just after 9pm.

A Spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said that ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to a fire at a derelict building on Thurlow Street in Southwark.

A sofa on the 11th floor of the 14-storey derelict block of flats was alight.

The Brigade’s 999 Control centre took their first call alerting them to the fire at 2055. Control mobilised crews from Old Kent Road, Peckham, Dockhead, Lambeth, Bethnal Green, Dockhead, Brixton, Soho and Paddington fire stations.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
