A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued across Kent as temperatures are expected to fall below freezing tonight. The Met Office alert is in place from 5 PM this evening until 10 AM tomorrow, Wednesday, November 20.

Icy Conditions Expected

The warning covers most of the county and the wider South of England. Forecasters have cautioned that icy patches are likely to form on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, creating hazardous conditions for travel and outdoor activities.

A Met Office spokesperson advised:
“Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than usual. Reducing your need to rush decreases the risk of accidents, slips, and falls.”

Motorists and cyclists are encouraged to stick to main roads that are more likely to have been treated, while pedestrians are urged to use pavements along major routes to avoid slippery surfaces.

Travel and Safety Advice

Emergency services are warning drivers to exercise extra caution, particularly during the evening and early morning when icy conditions are most severe.

A spokesperson for the fire service said:
“Please take extra care on roads across the county this evening and into tomorrow, with low temperatures and icy conditions forecast.”

Kent County Council has confirmed that gritters will be deployed from 8:30 PM to treat roads, with temperatures predicted to drop as low as -3°C overnight.

Support for Vulnerable People

Medway Council has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) to support rough sleepers. The council is working with partner agencies to provide emergency shelter for those in need.

Anyone sleeping rough is encouraged to contact Kingsley House in Gillingham by calling 01634 333600 or the Freephone number 0808 1641444 before 5 PM today to access support.

Residents are reminded to check on vulnerable neighbours and family members during the cold snap to ensure their safety.

Plan Ahead

The Met Office recommends checking road conditions and public transport schedules before heading out and considering amending travel plans where necessary. For the latest updates, visit the Met Office website or follow their social media channels.

Stay safe and plan ahead as icy conditions are expected to persist into the morning commute.
